Sometimes surviving doesn’t feel lucky. Especially when you’re a sole survivor…

At the age of seven, Malerie walked away from a bombing that left hundreds dead—including her mother. When a crazed gunman kills her guardian on her eighteenth birthday, Malerie suspects there may be more to her survival than luck. A mysterious code holds the key to her future, and a reluctant white knight holds the key to her heart.

A loner wearing emotional armor…

Ace is a twenty-year-old entrepreneur focusing on two things in life: financial security and a life without ties. A life that doesn’t risk losing the ones who matter. When Ace is hired to secretly act as a bodyguard for Malerie, he faces an unwanted attraction that threatens to sabotage his heart. Can Ace find the courage to love a girl with a death wish?

My Thoughts:

When I read the blurb for this book, I was really excited to read it. I loved the sound of the mystery and was expecting a lot of sexual tension and a hate-love relationship. I dig those kind of relationships. There is no two love sick people giggling, blushing and just saying 'I love you' all the time, and basically being very boring, and I hate boring.

Chasing Luck starts with Malerie's eighteenth birthday, where she is having sinner with her very rich guardian and uncle. There she meets Ace, a guy her uncle hired for security reasons. Their attraction is immediate, and when a shooting at the restaurant results in her guardians death, Malerie and Ace are thrown together to uncover truths about the events unfolding in Malerie's life.

I liked this book. The writing was very good and flowing, and the author has a way of making me wanting to read and never stop. Ace and Malerie are two characters I loved. She is sheltered with a past filled with pain and fear and he harbors guilt over the loss of his family and the betrayal in his life. They can't stop thinking about the other, and though Ace wants nothing to do with the heiress, he needs this job, even if it makes it harder for him not to harbor feelings for Malerie and to stay away to save himself more hurt, but she can't stay away either, even though Ace makes it very clear he's there for the money alone.

While I liked both characters and had no problem with their personalities, I didn't like them together. Remember how I mentioned I'm not a huge fan of lovey dovey couples? Well, Ace and Malerie are like that. They weren't really a couple and nothing happened until close to the end of the book, but from the start I had a problem with the insta-love thing they had going on. I understand insta-lust, but insta-love is something I don't like and while the attraction between the MCs was clear from the beginning, there were a lot of feelings involved that just made me want to shout 'too early!'.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book. I liked the mystery, and I liked that it kept me guessing. There were things happening all the time, and the action never let me get bored. I wanted to read as fast as possible to get to the button of the things happening. Sometimes though, the book felt like it bordered on the supernatural, and I when finished the book, I still had questions about the boxes. It wasn't really clear if they really meant something or if it all was a coincidence.

Well-written and action-filled, this book will have you wanting for more. If you don't mind a little extra love, then this book is great fast read you want to get your hands on!

Brinda Berry lives in the southern US with her family and two spunky cairn terriers. She’s terribly fond of chocolate, coffee, and books that take her away from reality.  She doesn’t mind being called a geek or “crazy dog lady”. 1. Thank you so much for reviewing Chasing Luck!

  2. Yeah I get lovey dovey couples would not be for everyone. I don't mind them in books, but in person when they're all over each other in public, it annoys me - like get a room! Lol! Glad you liked it overall though it sounds like a fun read! :)
